The last time I went to the pet store, I was mad at myself because I spent over a hundred dollars. Sure, I picked up things we needed, like puppy food, dog shampoo, and a new collar for Dot (she managed to chew her old collar off), but what I found myself spending the most on were dog treats. There are so many different kinds, I can never resist. Dash and Dot love their treats and I love giving them treats, so it’s a win-win, right? Wrong. These things add up!
I decided to try making them homemade treats. It couldn’t hurt. If they hated them, no big deal; I was able to make them using ingredients I already had around the house anyway.
To make Dash and Dot’s Homemade Dog Treats, you will need:
1 cup of peanut butter (creamy or chunky)
1/2 cup of water
1/2 cup of grated carrot
1 diced apple
1 cup of oats
2 cups of flour
1) Combine the peanut butter, eggs, water, carrots, and apple in a large mixing bowl.
2) Add your flour and oats. Mix your ingredients really well. A whisk won’t be able to handle the thickness of it, so use a wooden spoon.
3) Depending on the size of your dog, you can make the treats any size you’d like. My puppies are 14 lbs and 9 lbs, so I found that the perfect size was a mound that fits into a teaspoon. Using this amount gave me 5 dozen treats.
4) For treats this size, bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. Your baking time may vary depending on the size of your treats.
Note: I baked some on parchment paper to see if the result was different from baking directly on a cookie sheet; there was no difference.
Allow your treats to cool completely before giving them to your pups. Store in an airtight container and they should last about 2 weeks.
If you’re wondering if Dot and Dash like the treats, I’m happy to report that they love them! I broke one in half and split it between them to see how they’d like it. They sniffed it first, then gobbled it up. And when I was trying to take pictures of the treats with the puppies, Dot snatched one out of my hand because she was so excited to have more.
Dash loved them too!
