I had the pleasure of lunching with our Instagram foodie/blogger friend, Norma, today at Brussels Bistro in Laguna Beach.  It was such a gorgeous day!

We ended up ordering two appetizers (Beef Croquettes & Escargot with Herb Garlic Butter), two entrées (Pot of Mussels with Belgian Fries & the Hanger Steak with Red Wine Shallot Sauce), and one dessert (Warm Sugar Tart with Coffee Ice Cream).  We shared everything family style.

APPETIZERS:
The Beef Croquettes were crispy on the outside and savory on the inside, almost like the filling of a shredded beef pot pie.  It was delightful!  The pictures don’t do it justice.  It came with Dijon mustard, which I thought was definitely a good pairing.

The Escargot, as Julia Roberts said in Pretty Woman, were “slippery little suckers.”  We couldn’t get a grip on those things!  But boy, oh boy, did they photograph as well as they tasted!  Such a beautiful dish loaded with amazing flavor.  We even dipped our bread into the garlic butter; it was that good!

ENTRÉES:
The Mussels came out in a steaming pot, in a broth that was like a seafood stew.  We dipped bread into that as well.  The mussels were perfectly cooked, not over done, not too chewy, just right.

The Hanger Steak was overcooked (we ordered it medium, but it came out well done).  It was a bit tough and chewy.  Flavor was good because of the garlic butter, but overall, it was just okay; it wasn’t our favorite dish.

DESSERT:
Oh, this was magical!  I love coffee ice cream, so I already knew that would be delicious.  But the sugar tart itself could’ve been a dessert of it’s own.  It was so good. It was crispy, fluffy, light and chewy – just perfect.  It kind of tasted like a thin apple tart.

OVERALL OPINION:
Aside from the steak being overcooked, everything else was amazing, including our waitress.  I’m definitely giving Brussels Bistro duo thumbs up!

Thanks for inviting me, Norma, and thanks for having us Brussels Bistro!
